What is a Medium?

I am convinced beyond doubt that what we call our 'soul' or 'spirit' or 'pure consciuosness' is immortal and goes on to survive after our physical death in another dimension of time and space, and that this dimension continues to be accessible to all of us if we so choose.

I have a very simplistic metaphor to explain how the discarnate world of spirit communicates with our more familiar world of incarnate beings.

I liken the phenomena of mediumship to that of the transmission and receiving of radio and television programmes. We cannot taste, smell, hear or see the electromagnetic light and audio waves otherwise known as a signal that is being transmitted to our television and radio sets and to many of us this is a mystifying process.

Yet we accept without question the very process which enables us to watch television and listen to radio.

Rather like a television set mediums have an ability to receive transmissions but in this instance from the world of spirit.   The term "spirit" is used to describe our discarnate souls or the spirit of those now deceased. These signals are received and interpreted by the medium whose role it is to facilitate communication with spirits who have messages to share with non-mediums. There are several ways by which this can be achieved.

To be Clairvoyance or "Clear Seeing", is the ability to see anything which is not physically present, such as objects, animals or people. This sight occurs "in the mind’s eye", and some mediums say that this is their normal vision state. Others say that they must train their minds with such practices as meditation in order to achieve this ability, and that assistance from spiritual helpers is often necessary. Some clairvoyant mediums can see a spirit as though the spirit has a physical body. They see the bodily form as if it were physically present. Other mediums see the spirit in their mind's eye, or it appears as a movie or a television programme or a still picture like a photograph in their mind.

To be Clairaudience or "Clear Hearing", is usually defined as the ability to hear the voices or thoughts of spirits. Some Mediums hear as though they are listening to a person talking to them on the outside of their head, as though the Spirit is next to or near to the medium, and other mediums hear the voices in their minds as a verbal thought.

To be Clairsentience  or "Clear Sensing” is the ability to have an impression of what a spirit wants to communicate, or to feel sensations instilled by a spirit. Clairsentience allows the medium to identify the  physical health as well as emotional states  the spirit may wish to reveal.

To be Clairolfactrience or "Clear Smelling" is the ability to smell a spirit. For example, a medium may smell the pipe or cigarette tobacco of a person who smoked during life or smell aromas like the bread they may have baked or perfume that would have been worn by the spirit.

To be Clairgustance or "Clear Tasting" is the ability to receive taste impressions from a spirit.

To be Claircognizance or "Clear Knowing", is the ability to know and trust intuitively the rhythmic flow of information which is being received though not through normal or psychic senses. It is a feeling of "just knowing". Often, a medium will claim to have the feeling that a message or situation is "right" or "wrong."

Physical Mediumship is no longer a common practise. Physical Mediums allow the Spirit Communicator to channel through them. It is important that Physical Mediums work in a safe environment and with the assistence of other mediums who can oversee proceedings. There are several ways such a medium may work.

Transfiguration is when the face of spirit superimposes itself over the face of the medium. Materialisation is when spirit can be seen by all those presemnt. Apports are physical objects brought through by spirit to a group sitting as recipients. Ectoplasm is spirit energy appearing in the form of wispy white vapour, fog or mist emanating from the body of the medium usually during a trance state.

Direct Voice is when actual physical sound of a voice comes through a physiical object such as a Trumpet Mediums are always in control and Spirit does not take over but rather work with the medium in partnership.
